Joachim Frank was born in Weidenau/Sieg (now Siegen), Germany and studied Physics at the University of Freiburg and the University of Munich. He worked on his dissertation in EM-related image processing with Walter Hoppe at the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry and finished his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1970 at the Technical University of Munich.
